Tonight we have the privilege to attend the launch of a book by none other than SAIC Arts and Administration professor Rachel Weiss. The book covers the Third Havana Biennale of 1989, which is often credited in various international arts communities as being the first major Arts Biennale Exhibition, which set the model for the current global events such as the Venice Biennale, perhaps the most important showing of global art. Also on hand was the curator for the First through Third Havana Biennales, Gerardo Mosquera, who provided a plethora of insight into intricate workings (as well as inherent frustrations) required to set up such an event. A discussion afterwards delved into the current state of global exhibitions and a comparison & contrast of sorts between the older and contemporary models.
