Okay, let's discuss
De Appel. An institution for contemporary arts of all types, we're on hand to view a screening of the experimental documentary film
Spectres by Belgian artist
Sven Augustijen, which is an investigation into the 1960 assassination of former Belgian colony Congo's prime minister
Patrice Lumumba who led the Congo into liberation from Belgium. The film is both thought provoking and quite dramatic, with interviews from all sides of the incident's involved parties, including Lumumba's wife and children. Set to J.S. Bach's
St. John's Passion, the experimental documentary feature some very long shots and a matter of fact following of the participants.
The show has an accompanying exhibit of photography and supporting materials that include magazines, newspapers and advertisements which were concurrent with the times of Lumumba's murder and the subsequent investigation. Check De Appel's website
HERE for much more information because I simply cannot do it justice in this short post.
One of our fellow student's is participating in a weekly series of exhibits at one of the art schools here in Amsterdam, so we'll be doing that tonight and I'll post more photos of Amsterdam and the show next.
