Day three in Brussels was a free day and provided the opportunity to travel to Paris, which I had yet to experience in previous travels. After losing two and a half hours to a suicide on the tracks in Brussels, I got under way at around 11:45 a.m. and arrived in Paris around 1:45 p.m. after a brief stop along the way for reasons unknown.
Plans originally included a visit to the La Cinematheque Francais to check out their exhibit concerning the classic film Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang and then the Jeu de Paum for a retrospective on photographer Diane Arbus. Neither of those happened as I agreed with my internal voices that this being the first time in Paris, I had to get the touristy things out of the way. You can check out a slideshow of my eight hour excursion in the side pane to the right.
Paris is really amazing. You always hear how wonderful Paris is and that you've got to go and this and that and for some reason, you never get there. I actually struggled with the decision to spend the money on the train ticket in the first place. I have to admit, I now understand what the fuss is all about. Paris is really one of those places where you learn a little bit about yourself and you're definitely more than a little sad (especially after only one day) to leave it behind when you get on that last train at 10:01 p.m.
The decision was made immediately to return at some point in the near future. It's mandatory that I take my wife Lauren with me next time because after all, Paris is for lovers right? She doesn't know it yet, but she will absolutely fall in love...with Paris that is.
